TOWN AND COUNTRY POLO CLUB NEWS: FEBRUARY 2010

Farewell to a polo legend

Game On!

Our thoughts are with Susan Ashton and family following the tragic loss of our good friend and mentor, James Ashton, who died as a result of a fall during a 10 goal match in Thailand on Sunday, 14 February.

Launch of Kids Polo: Sunday 21 February

Game On!

On Sunday morning, 21 February 2010, Town and Country Polo Club will be running an introductory/registration day for any children who wish to play polo in 2010. This initiative has the support of the NSW Polo Association.

The event will be held at the Town and Country Polo Field on Triangle Lane, Richmond, NSW and will start at 9.00am. The aim of the day is to encourage and introduce children under the age of 17 to come and play polo. All children are welcome. There is no immediate requirement to have your own ponies or polo gear as we will be able to assist with these initially. Children of all ages are encouraged to attend.

The only requirements are that:

Small tournaments are planned for every weekend throughout the autumn and spring polo seasons to be run in conjunction with the major tournaments held in the Hawkesbury area. These tournaments will be designed to teach kids horsemanship and the game of polo and encourage participation.

Please come and join up on 21 February and get involved in this great family sport.

Town and Country on tour - Stella Artois International Polo Invitational, Christchurch: 25 January 2010

At the invitation of Mark Harris, Roddy Wood and the South Island Polo Association, eight Town and Country players headed across the Tasman on 20 January to compete in the International Invitational Test Match and ladies' curtain raiser.

Practise chukkas were played on the Thursday and Friday, in order to try horses, but heavy rain on the Friday night resulted in the cancellation of Saturday's games, which were to be an opportunity to put ponies through their paces in preparation for the big day.

Lisa Fahey, Julie McIntosh, Katie Grimmond and Sarah Martin met a strong Kiwi side of Cath and Emma Calder, Tiki Brown and Maddy Rankin. The Town and Country ladies scored two early goals, but were quickly stopped in their tracks by the New Zealanders who went on to defeat the visitors 10-2.

Game On!

The Town and Country men's team made amends, however, defeating the Kiwis 6-4. Brendan Fahey, Jeremy Bayard, Kelvin Johnson and Jock Mackay played Mark and Drew Harris, Daniel Loe and Matt O'Sullivan in a close and hard won match.

Game On!

Much fun was had by the tourists, who are indebted to the generosity of the horse lenders for trucking ponies from all over the South Island, as well as to those who kindly offered accommodation to the Australians. We hope to soon have an opportunity to reciprocate, hosting the Kiwis for a similar event in Richmond.

Autumn Polo

The new season started early this year with the launch of the Australian Polo Summer Series 10-14 goal tournament, which was to be played in two parts on various fields in the Hawkesbury area. Series One, due to run from 3 to 14 February, had to be cancelled due to wet weather, but it is hoped that the Series Two games, scheduled to run from 17 to 28 February, will be uninterrupted.

The next fixture on the tournament calendar is The Kerry Packer Challenge Cup 14 goal tournament (3-14 March) to which Town and Country will be sending the following team: Brendan Fahey, Jeremy Bayard, Juan Cruz Losada and Andrew Williams. Wishing them the best of luck!

Please see Calendar page for full schedule of autumn tournaments in New South Wales.
